Somnath Chatterjee’s body to be preserved

Somnath Chatterjee was an institution, he made our Parliamentary democracy richer and was a strong voice for the well-being of the poor and vulnerable.

The former Lok Sabha speaker had pledged to donate his body, he signed the form along with his wife on September 8, 2002, when he was 73 years old.

Somnath Chatterjee’s body was donated on Organ Donation Day. His body reached the anatomy department on monday evening. According to the professors, the body that is donated, has been in use for a long time for study and research. His body will be embalmed by the Doctors to prevent decomposition. The dissection does not happen in one session, after that the organs and bones will be preserved again for future studies so that every student can benefit from this.

He followed the footsteps of his mentor Jyoti Basu, who donated his body and it is still in use for research and education purposes after 8 years.
