Scorching heat wave in Kolkata affects the citizens

Kolkata, the city of joy, is currently experiencing a scorching heat wave that has made life difficult for its residents. With temperatures hovering around 40-42 degrees Celsius, the heat wave has brought in hot and dry winds, making it unbearable to step out during the day. The heat wave is not a new phenomenon in Kolkata, but this year it has been particularly intense. The high temperature has led to power outages in many areas, causing discomfort and inconvenience to the citizens. The humidity level in the city has also been high, making the weather even more uncomfortable.

The heatwave has also had a significant impact on the health of people, particularly the elderly and children. Many people have reported suffering from heat exhaustion, dehydration, and other heat-related illnesses. The government has advised people to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous activities. The scorching heatwave has also affected the daily lives of people, with many businesses and shops closing down during the day to avoid the heat. Schools and colleges have been closed for this week and some have shifted to the online mode of teaching-learning.

The heat wave in Kolkata is a reminder of the urgent need to address climate change and its impacts. Rising temperatures and extreme weather events are becoming increasingly common around the world, and cities like Kolkata must take steps to adapt to these changes, the primary action being plantation of trees among the concrete jungles. The Met Officials have notified that the city has not witnessed such a level of temperature and continuous heat wave for years and the respite in the form of rainfall is yet to come.
