Santragachi Jheel, is it still heaven for birds?

The chill in the air will make you realize that its winter now and the Munias are flocking together for their breeding season in the outskirts of our joyous city.

If this makes you want to go see them for yourself. You should head off to Santragachi. The name itself carries the smell of diesel engines, railway tracks, and the sound of trains passing by. But Santragachi is also famous as a place where migratory birds come. The lake in Santragachi which hosts our international guests is 13, 75000 square feet approximately and is maintained by the forest department.

There was a time when this lake was home to the elusive Baikal Teals, now it has birds like lesser whistling ducks, cotton pygmy goose, common moorhen, and other water birds along with the migratory birds like Red Crested Pochards, Gadwalls, Common Teals, and the famous Knob-billed Ducks.

But according to the locals, the lake hasn’t been maintained properly this year and they fear it might not look welcoming to the birds.
