RPF cracks down against unauthorised sale of packaged water

In a countrywide crackdown on selling of unauthorized packaged drinking water within Railway stations, officials of Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrested 1371 persons from all major stations of Indian Railways.

Railway officials said that the drive was carried out on July 8 and 9 under the direction of DG, RPF who had instructed all zonal Principal Chief Security Commissioners (PCSC) to carry out ‘Operation Thirst’ against all offenders. “Almost all major stations in the country were covered in the operation and. Offenders selling unauthorized brands of packaged drinking water within Railway premises at different stations were booked under sections 144 and 153 of the Railway Act. An amount of Rs 6,80,855 had been realized as the penalty imposed on offenders,” said a senior Railway official.

It was also found out that among the 1371 persons arrested were four pantry car managers who were hand-in-glove in running the racket.

Many stalls on platforms were also found selling brands which were not authorized. Such stall owners have also been booked.

An investigation into all the cases has been initiated and attempts are being made to find out the source of the racket. RPF officials said that strict action would be taken against anyone found guilty of being involved in the racket. PCSC concerned were asked to take continuous action against the menace so that it didn't resurface.
