Railway Ministry approves additional funds for tracks under Maidan

The Railway Ministry has finally approved additional funds for building tracks under the Maidan area for the Joka-Esplanade Metro project. The railway ministry has approved Rs 2,825 crore for building 6km of tracks under Maidan. Earlier, the railway ministry had allocated Rs 650 crore for the viaduct till BBD Bag but the project remained stalled since 2011 because the army, which happens to be the custodian of the Maidan objected to the plans. The standoff between the railways and defense ministry finally ended in 2015 after Prime Minister Narendra Modi intervened and asked the defense ministry to ensure that the project was not delayed. The Defense Ministry then agreed to the plans of laying tracks of the Joka-Esplanade Metro under the Maidan area. However, other issues like additional costs still popped in, which stalled the project further. The implementing agency, Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd has split the project into two phases currently and with new funds coming in, the project is expected to be completed within the new speculated time.
