5 Must Visit Places in the 'Land Of Druk'

Taktsang Monastery: Taktsang Monastery, also known as Tiger’s Nest, is one of the holiest places in Bhutan. The monastery is mounted on a high granite cliff and was established for meditation. Perched on a rocky ledge with a sheer drop of nearly 800 meters, the monastery overlooks the Paro valley and the river. It is believed that in the second half of the 8th century, Guru Padma Sambhava, also known as the second Buddha in Bhutan, meditated at the exact same spot as the monastery, having alighted there on the back of a flying tigress.

Punakha: This breathtaking destination in Bhutan, has been an isolated place, yet linked to some of the most important events in the Bhutanese history. This place deserves its reputation as one of the most beautiful and significant regions at the heart of Bhutanese culture. This district, served as the capital of Bhutan from 1637 till 1907. People visit this place mostly to understand the Bhutanese history and to enjoy its natural beauty.

Wangduephodrang: The last town on the central highway before central Bhutan. This small town is located south of Punakha, which is the higher ground of the Wangduephodrang valley. This district is famous for its stone craving, fine bamboo products and many more. Wangduephodrang Dzong (which is a tomb) and which sits on top of the hill at the confluence of Punakha Chhu and Tang Chhuu( river) is an attraction point for Wangduephodrang. During  Autumn the Dzong is open for the visitors as it is the suitable time of the year.

Bumthang Valley: Well what we can say about this one. The famous Bumthang Valley is considered as the spiritual heartland of Bhutan. It is full of ancient and precious Buddhist sites. Located at an altitude of 2,600 meters, the religious hub of Bhutan houses some of the oldest Buddhist temples. Jakar is the main town in the Valley and in its undulating terrain, one will find trees filled with apples and numerous temples, and are surely a tourist’s delight.

Phuentsholing: Phuentsholing, another must visit place in Bhutan, is a small town with clean environment. The main tourist attractions of Phuentsholing are the Crocodile Breeding Center, Amo Chuu, The Bhutan Gate, Chukha Hydrothermal Project, and Karbandi Monastery.
