Peace within chaos

In the hustle bustle of all the sounds of the city stands tall a Buddhist Monastery is known as the Calcutta Karma Gon Monastery it is 400 meters away from the Padmapukur bus stand at Lansdowne. The monastery got its name from Karma Gon Monastery of the Karma Kagyu sect of the Tibetan Buddhism. It was established in 12th century by Dusum Khyenpa, the first Karmapa Lama in the Kham province of eastern Tibet.

A monk named Akka Dorjee of the Bhutia Busty monastery came to Calcutta in the 1930s and stayed in Alipore and did puja for Buddhist people of Himalayan Origin. He later shifted to 7Chakraberia Lane, where the Monastery is situated now. The monastery gives shelter the poor and sick people. There are two sets of prayer wheels to welcome you at the gate.

The monastery has a ground floor for resident community members, first floor for deities and the prayer hall which is 1500 square feet. There are four deities there and all are facing towards the north. Apart from the deities the room has several paintings depicting the Buddhist culture. The rooftop has a stupa like structure which has a statue of meditating Buddha. It is a true beauty in the middle of the city. so, if you want to achieve a moment of peace within the urban setting then surely visit this place.
