Online OPD tickets for government hospitals

Standing in long queues outside the Outdoor PatientsDepartment (OPD) at state-run hospitals to get their tickets for doctors’ consultation is soon likely to be a thing of the past.

In a huge step forward by the West Bengal state health department, it has been decided that OPD patients will now be able to get their tickets online. After ascending to power, the Mamata Banerjee-led government had taken several constructive steps towards improvement of health facilities. Government hospitals have received major facelift and have turned spic and span. Standard of service has also gone up.

A major portion of the population visits government hospitals as compared to private nursing homes owing to the cost involved and thus people standing in long serpentine queues is a common sight every morning and often a lot of trouble spark at the queue. Authorities believe that giving out medical services will be a lot streamlined at government hospitals once this process is rolled out.

To make it user friendly, authorities have decided to make it a simple process. One will have to first visit the state health department’s official website at www.wbhealth.gov.in. Then they will have to choose the ‘OPD Tickets Booking’ option from where they will have to choose from the hospital and the services concerned.

Alternatively, users can also visit http://onlinehmis.wbhealth.gov.in, on their mobile phone and will have to register with their mobile phone numbers which will be verified with an OTP. Once it is verified, the user will get a dropdown menu on which he or she can select the government hospital required and book a ticket from there. If required, the availability of different doctors at hospitals of one’s choice can be saved on the phone itself.

At present in Kolkata the facility is available for government hospitals such as NRS, SSKM, RG Kar, and Calcutta National Medical College Hospital. Among the districts, government hospitals at Diamond Harbour, Murshidabad, Rampurhat, Bankura, Raiganj, Malda, Cooch Behar, Burdwan and Purulia districts have also been roped in.
