Nursing rooms now mandatory in malls

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has directed all the shopping malls in the city to set up nursing rooms where mothers can breastfeed their babies and change their diapers. The decision was finalised at Mayor in Council’s meeting which was headed by Mayor Firhad Hakim. KMC has decided to incorporate this rule in Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s building rules which governs shops and commercial buildings like malls. This decision came after an incident which took place at a shopping complex in Kolkata where a mother wasn’t able to find a suitable place to feed her seven months old baby caught social media attention. However, she was later offered a trail room of a garment store to feed her baby in complete privacy. Following this the social networking sites were full of comments where people highlighted the need of such facilities in malls and shopping complexes. Mayor Firhad hakim said, “We recognise that feeding an infant is a basic right. Public places like malls should provide the necessary privacy for a mother to nurse her child. We have to make out city friendlier for young mothers and not force them to stay at home because facilities like malls are insensitive to the needs of a new mother“.
