No charges for cleaning water supply lines

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has recently decided to stop charging any fee for cleaning of water supply lines (ferrules). Earlier KMC’s water supply department used to charge a nominal fee of Rs 100 for cleaning ferrules in areas like Behala, Garden Reach, Tollygunge, Jadavpur and areas off EM Bypass. A senior official of KMC said, “We used to charge Rs 100 for cleaning a ferrule in the added areas. We needed to charge this fee as we had to engage a contractor for the cleaning work as we lacked departmental infrastructure in the added areas. But taxpayers must know that now we don’t charge anything for cleaning of ferrules”.

Mayor Firhad Hakim has asked his senior KMC officials to take actions and prevent occurrences where KMC staffs are charging money for these services. For cleaning up the water supply line in case it has dried up the normal flow of filtered water, a citizen now has to simply write an application to the department chief in the locality and the water supply department will attend to the application in 24 hours without charging any fee. The mayor has stated that this service is a basic service that should be delivered to a taxpayer without any charge.
