New water plant at Palta

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has inaugurated a new water plant at Palta waterworks on Thursday, March 12th.  The new water plant at Palta will increase the supply of filtered water by 20 million gallons per day. Due to this new plant, the capacity of Palta waterworks will increase to 262 million gallons per day. This increased supply of filtered water will help in distribution of water in north and central Kolkata and large parts of south Kolkata as well. The KMC water supply department reported that this new plant will initially serve selected areas like Cossipore, Dum Dum, Bagbazar, Belgachhia Paikpara, Northern Avenue and R G Kar Road. Once the distribution network gets better, this project will also cater to other areas which fall under scarcity zones under the Palta water treatment plant. A senior official of the KMC water supply department said, “Our initial target is to supply additional filtered water to large areas of north Kolkata in and around Tallah water reservoir. Slowly, we will strengthen our distribution network in the entire Palta-Tallah command zone to supply filtered water to lakhs of residents in north, central and south Kolkata”. This new plant replaced an old plant which had a capacity of producing 18 million gallons of filtered water per day that stopped functioning in 2017. Another official of the water supply department said, “The old plant had been malfunctioning since a decade and finally, stopped working in 2017. At that point, we decided to build another plant with augmented capacity to cater to the growing population under the Palta-Tallah command zone. This new plant will go a long way in ensuring uninterrupted filtered water supply to greater parts of the city”.
