New commercial court set up in New Town

A new commercial court has been set up to cater to the needs of four districts — North 24-Parganas, Nadia, Howrah and Hooghly. People who want to file commercial suits won’t necessarily have to travel to Barasat anymore like before to file the suit but can visit this new commercial court as well. The new court is set up in New Town’s Finance Centre, on the third floor of the same building where the Mother’s Wax Museum is situated, opposite Eco Park. Other than this, three new commercial courts have been set up in Siliguri, Asansol and Alipore and all these courts will function under the umbrella of the commercial division of the High Court. The courts were inaugurated by Chief Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan via video conferencing and one judge has been assigned for each of these courts to hear commercial cases. The New Town court is expected to listen to commercial cases worth more than Rs 75 lakhs. Pending cases, as many as 200 are being shifted to this new court at New Town. IT secretary Debashis Sen who coordinates issues relating to business index said, “The setting up of the courts was a requirement for ease of doing business. These courts will deal with disputes that are purely civil in nature, such as contractual, payment-related, dealing with land acquisition, compensation etc. I met the new chief justice of the Calcutta High Court and made the request. He took a lot of initiative”.
