New Bishop for Kolkata Diocese

The Calcutta diocese of the Church of North India (CNI) gets a new bishop after the previous bishop Reverend Probal Kanta Dutta was transferred back as the full-time bishop of Durgapur, from where he came to Calcutta last year. Reverend Paritosh Canning will be taking over as the new bishop of Calcutta diocese, he is going to be the 21st Bishop of Calcutta Diocese. Reverend Paritosh Canning, 50 years old, will also be holding additional charge of Barrackpore. Suresh Jacob, Executive member of Delhi Synod, the supreme body of the Church of North India told the press, "Paritosh Canning, transferred from the Diocese of Barrackpore, will be installed as the new Bishop of Calcutta Diocese at 5:00 pm in St. Paul's Cathedral on Tuesday". Suresh Jacob also elaborated on Reverend Probal Kanta Dutta being transferred and said that he has been sent back to Durgapur since his absence was greatly felt there. It was decided at a special meeting of the Delhi synod that Reverend Canning will be heading the Calcutta diocese with additional charges of Barrackpore. After which two representatives of the synod’s executive committee visited Calcutta, and Reverend Canning assumed his new charge in their presence at the Bishop’s House. Bishops of Church of North India are eligible to head a diocese till they attain the age of 68, and no Bishop of any of the three Dioceses in Bengal was ever transferred before, till Reverend Dutta was sent to Calcutta from Durgapur. The Church of North India currently has a total of 27 Dioceses spread across 26 states in India.
