The Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation ( HIDCO) that plans and executes development projects in the entire 6,000– 7,000-hectare area in Rajarhat- New Town has transformed a cemented metro Pillar into a vertical Garden with help of a local nursery owner.

A vertical garden is a type of garden that grows upward (vertically) using a trellis or other support system. In the last Bengal Global Business Summit under ‘Egiye Bangla’ (It is a platform for start-ups based in West Bengal to showcase their unique business ideas and get a chance to win recognition, rewards, and support for their business) a proposal was received. After which a start-up company designed a vertical garden in Eco Park as an experiment. After the idea was successful a local nursery in Rajarhat area approached HIDCO to transform the pillars on road into vertical Garden. The 1st pillar that has been transformed into this vertical garden is located near NazrulTritha.

“This basically is a frame to support small pots. Converting metro pillar into a vertical garden was difficult because it was cylindrical in shape, too tall and also there were space constraints due to the continuous movement of vehicles from both sides. However, it turned out to be great and after its success, we are planning to transform other metro pillars into vertical gardens”, said Hidco Chairman and Managing Director Debashish Sen.

As per sources, HIDCO wanted to beautify the pillars for quite some time and as experiments efforts were made to grow creeper plants on those pillars. However, it didn’t grow well due to lack of sunlight and hence the idea had to be dropped.

Climbing plants and vines are far from the only options when it comes to vertical gardening. With a little planning and the right materials, vertical gardens can be created that allow you to grow virtually anything”, said a gardener AbhijeetDas. As per experts in order to maintain these water is supplied at the top row of pockets which wicks down through the felt and can be supplied by a drip irrigation or hand watered.
