Mini Punjab in the heart of Kolkata

A luxury hotel in the city saw a fire lit in the middle of the poolside courtyard. Guests from different communities were dancing to the tunes and steps of the bhangra as they circled the fire and filled the evening air with drumbeats. The Sikh community came together to celebrate Lohri on Saturday and made it a gala event. Guests from various communities and walks of life were invited to welcome the new harvest season.

In addition to Lohri fire and bhangra, was delectable Punjabi food including Roahkikhir, halwa, khajur, pinni, and other items. Guests were treated to the best flavours from Punjab. For the Sikh community, Lohri also marks the beginning of the new financial year. The festival brought together different communities such as Parsis, Christians, Hindus, and others. The Sikh community claims that this event is a celebration of the bonhomie, of the city’s ethos of living together.

People thoroughly enjoyed the vibrant colours, company of the lovely people, and the fantastic food. One of the leading members of the Sikh community, Satnam Singh Ahluwalia claims that they want their traditions to be followed by next generations. That is why they created a mini Punjab through this festival in Kolkata. The event was truly representative of the city’s ability to embrace all cultures and traditions.
