Metro Railway installs convex mirrors in platforms

The Metro Railway Authorities have installed convex mirrors, one at each end of the platform on both Up and Down platforms at the Park Street Metro station recently. This action is being taken after the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) instructed the Metro Railway authorities to install these convex mirrors in the platform in all its stations as soon as possible. These convex mirrors are a part of the safety feature of the platform and will help the driving motorman to notice any irregular incident taking place on the platform while passengers and boarding and deboarding the metro compartments. The conducting motorman will, however, have to observe the last four compartments manually from his cab whereas the driving motorman observes the remaining four using these convex mirrors. The CRS has instructed the railway authorities to take this action after the incident of a passenger's death took place as one of the rakes started moving with the passenger’s hand stuck between the doors and his body lying outside. Metro Railway CPRO Indrani Banerjee said, “This will enable the driving motorman to check whether passengers have boarded the train without turning his head. He will also be able to make out whether those who got off have cleared the doors. The conducting motorman will have no problem as he can just turn and face the front of the train and check whether everything is fine. Such mirrors will be installed at all 24 stations within a month. Meanwhile, the deployment of additional security personnel at stations will continue to prevent people from pushing their hands through doors that are closing”. The Metro Railway authorities have informed that similar convex mirrors will be installed at all the metro stations soon.
