Madhyamik examination begins today

The first board examinations for school students under the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) will be happening from today and board authorities informed that this year the number of examinees taking the test has gone down by 18,408.

Interacting with media persons, WBBSE president Kalyanmoy Ganguly said that for the total number of candidates who would take the test in 2019 was 10,64,980 comprising 6,03,311 (56.65%) girls and 4,61,669 (43.35%) boys.

The total number of examinees has gone down by 18,408 this year, about 1.7 per cent less compared to last year’s figure probably owing to lower birth rates,” he quipped and added that the lowered figure is most likely because of a high pass rate because of which fewer students were repeating.

The number of examiners this year is 51,246, which was 50,755 last year and the number head of examiners has also been raised from 1025 to 1537.

Putting rest to all the controversies regarding the leaking of question papers before they reached the examination hall, Ganguly said,

This year the board has that the sealed packet containing question papers will be opened before the candidates inside the examination hall before they are distributed to them

To recall, in an incident at Subhasnagar High School in Jalpaiguri district, the headmaster of the school had allegedly opened the question papers 35 minutes ahead of the scheduled time and had reached it to the school topper in a bid to improve the result of the candidate so that the school gets fame.

Mobile phones would be strictly prohibited among those associated with the examination and only a few would be using the device strictly for examination purposes.

The examination will begin at 11.45 am and will continue till 3 pm. Packets, containing 10 question papers each will reach the examination hall at 11.35 am with the help of venue in-charge, venue supervisor and additional venue supervisors. There will be a fewer number of examinees in each room so that it can be conducted smoothly. The examinations will conclude on February 22.
