M S Dhoni: A Glorious Journey

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the former Indian Cricket Team captain and perhaps one of the most famous cricket players of the century turns 40 today! Dhoni was born in Ranchi, Jharkhand in a Rajput family in 1981.

He was first recognised for his efforts in the 2003-2004 season, especially in the One Day format and was picked for the India A squad for a tour of Zimbabwe and Kenya. MSD, a right-handed middle-order batsman and wicket-keeper is one of the highest run scorers in One Day Internationals (ODIs) with more than 10,000 runs scored in his name and is an outstanding finisher in limited-overs format.

He is widely regarded as one of the greatest wicket-keeper batsmen in the history of the game. He is also the only international captain to have won ICC 50-over World Cup, T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy. It was under his leadership that India reached number one ranking in both Test and ODI formats of the game.

Under his captaincy, India won the inaugural 2007 ICC World Twenty20, the 2010 and 2016 Asia Cups, the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. Dhoni won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title thrice with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) since the start of the tournament back in 2008.

M S Dhoni has been the recipient of many awards, including the ICC ODI Player of the Year award in 2008 and 2009, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 2007, the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour in 2009 and the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honour, in 2018. Dhoni was conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel by The Indian Territorial Army on 1st November, 2011. He announced his retirement from international cricket on 15 August 2020.
