Loose sweets to come with expiry and manufacturing dates

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued a notice that from June onwards the local sweet shops will have to display the date of manufacturing and best before date on loose sweets kept in a tray or container for sale at their stores. Currently, the aforementioned details are only displayed on or are mandatory on labels pre-packaged or pre-packed sweets. The order issued by FSSAI stated,

“In the public interest and to ensure food safety, it has been decided that in case of non-packaged/loose sweets, the container/tray holding sweets at the outlet for sale should display the ‘date of manufacturing’ and ‘best before date’ of the product,”

This step has been taken after there have been several reports of stale and expired sweets being sold were circulating the market. Hence the FSSAI is directing this notice in order to make sure that the consumption of sweets doesn’t pose any health hazard to the consumers. The circular also mentions,

“Traditional milk-based sweets are generally prepared from khoya, chhena, sugar and other ingredients such as maida, flavours and colours e.g. peda, barfi, milk cake, gulab jamun, rasgulla, ras malai, etc. Sweets have a limited shelf life. Sweets particularly those with milk products have lesser shelf life and hygiene in their preparation and consumption within shelf life is of utmost importance.”

It will be the duty of the state food safety commissioners to ensure that FSSAI’s directive is strictly followed.
