KP Officers to head for poll duties

As a part of their election duties, around 2,100 officers of the Kolkata Police will be leaving for East Midnapore’s Contai and Tamluk to look after the polling process during the sixth phase of parliamentary elections to be held on May 12. The deployment of these officers for election duty is a challenge for the Kolkata Police Force. The traffic department will be facing most of the challenges with 750 of its officers deployed for election duty, which means fewer cops for monitoring the city traffic. A Kolkata Police officer said, “The force has been drawn from traffic police who form the lion’s share of deployment. Other units, which have contributed to this force, are armed battalions, the special branch, and even the security control. With Kolkata going to polls in little over than a week’s time, we do not want to draw out too many men from the nine police stations”. The traffic department has decided to deploy more home guards and civic volunteers for now to handle vehicular traffic flow in the city. A traffic department official said, “We will withdraw the home guards, who now check pedestrian movement, and deploy them for regular vehicular movement through guidance from senior officers”. However, Kolkata Police has reported that the lack of officers won’t have much of an impact since nowadays the department relies more on technology for traffic flow and its management.
