কতই রঙ্গ দেখি দুনিয়ায়

The world is a strange place, where humour seems to veil itself under dark social issues. Nothing can surpass the digs made at, on and about social media, exposing how hypocritical humanity can be when it comes to real progression, or as they say, being cool.

Among the many circulating Bengali dailies, recently, weirdness took quite a few steps up in one. In bold Bengali font, the advert speaks of a certain well-paid man’s possibly demented father looking for an educated, fair and slim girl for his son and included a rather ludicrous footnote; ‘prospective brides must be miles away from social media space’. The roots of comedy go deep and in an instant, the canons of feminism went haywire. Living under the lights of 2018, it is severely satiric and disturbing at the same time and raises one question - Are we marching on towards reverse evolution? This is not an isolated incident and there are countless such advertisements stencilled across newspapers which have been the topic of amusement for avid readers. Beneath the layers of hilarity, there’s a stark irony revealing the unchanged realm of ultra-conservative mentality where a girl’s integrity is now judged from her presence on Facebook and Whatsapp.

Internet is an indispensible part of this era, and social amity can’t be ruled out considering our access to the whole wide world by a few touches. If the concept of holy matrimony is now being degraded by such discrimination, then we are left wondering if society is actually undergoing progress.
