Kolkata’s Japanese Buddhist Temple

Do you know that hidden in plain sight, there is a Japanese Buddhist temple in the very heart of Kolkata? This has turned out to be a very peaceful place for visitors in Kolkata.

Nipponzan Myohoji, the pacifist of Japanese religious movement, had a host of followers since late 1930s. This white temple in Kolkata is the abode of contemplation and reflection. There are even quarters for the devotees and monks to stay.

Visitors from all over the world come to the temple. It is located on Lake Road which is now the Kabi Bharati Sarani. It is, in fact, run by monks from North and East India.

Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Temple has a beautiful small signage at the entrance that reads “Na – Mu – Myo – Ho – Ren – Ge – Kyo.” On translation, it means “I take refuge in the wonderful law of the Lotus Flower Sutra.”

The beautiful interior of the Japanese Buddhist temple creates an aura all over and entices a good number of guests during the morning and evening prayer schedule.
