Kolkata stray pup now a part of elite dog squad

A stray pup, rescued from the streets a year and a half ago and named Asha by her rescuers, is set to join the West Bengal Police’s dog squad, thereby becoming the first common mongrel to be a part of a squad boasting of pedigreed dogs such as German Shepherds and Labradors. Asha was discovered by two cops from the streets when she was being pelted by stones by street urchins. The initial idea was to keep her as a pet, but the erstwhile Inspector General (training) K. Jayaraman felt that she could make it into the dog squad if given proper training.

The dog training wing at Barrackpore has 30 dogs. Except Asha, the other breeds are Labradors and German Shepherds. Although dog squad handlers claim that all the dogs are equally intelligent, Asha has outperformed the other dogs in jump and sprint. She can detect explosives like RDX, TNT, and gelatin. One and a half years later, she is a fully trained dog and the dog squad handlers are proud of their experiment with Asha. Her work in bomb detection is seemed to be “flawless”. Her trainers are pleasantly surprised at her progress. She could follow instructions to sit, salute, rest, lie down, and roll over quite early. She jumped to six feet high and crossed hurdles while her more pedigreed peers could only manage to jump up to three feet.

It seems that Asha, true to her name, has given a new avenue to recruit more street dogs into the dog squad. She has truly broken the glass ceiling.
