Kolkata Police Whatsapp group during polls

Ahead of the general elections which is due in April-May this year, Kolkata Police, in order to make the process a peaceful one, will introduce a WhatsApp helpline on Saturday.

Citizens, in general, will be able to provide information and if possible with pictures and videos on the group about illegal arms manufacturing units, distribution of money to influence voters and other illegal activities. Details of informers will be kept secret and those who provide detailed information on illegal activities will also be awarded by Kolkata Police.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) too has started a smartphone app, C-Vigil, through which anyone can bring an irregularity to the notice of the ECI. Kolkata Police too has followed suit to ensure that law and order are maintained ahead and during the polls.

Lalbazar sources said that newly-appointed Kolkata Police Commissioner Anuj Sharma has advised all the police stations and deputy commissioners in this regard. Police are also gearing up to arrest on preventive grounds, persons against whom non-bailable warrants have been issued. Kolkata Police will be extra vigilant against the business and use of illegal arms.

Arrests of people with unaccounted money have already begun. On Thursday, one Ghanshyam Behula, a Gujarat resident, had been arrested with an amount of Rs 11 lakh which he could not provide any explanation about. Again in the evening on Thursday, another Ranjan Singh had been arrested from Posta PS area with unaccounted money amounting to Rs 13 lakh. Police said that such raids and arrests will continue till the polls so that confidence is instilled among people and they can exercise their franchise without any fear, coercion or enticement.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had expressed her apprehension that there would be attempts to tamper with the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in West Bengal during Lok Sabha polls.

“I have been told that an agency has been hired to tamper with the EVMs. Counting agents, therefore, should undergo special training as far as the Voters Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT),”

she had said on February 25.
