Kolkata Metro’s fare hiked

The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) has recently revised its fares for the first time in the last six years. Though the minimum fare was not changed, the fare hike will be implemented at every subsequent level by Rs 5. The Kolkata Metro which is governed by the Indian Rail Board has reported that this fare hike is implemented in order to make the present system more efficient with better services and risk management. According to a recent statement by KMRC, the fare for the 2-5 km distance will be Rs 10; for the 5-10 km stretch, the fare will be Rs 15 and for the 10-20 km distance, the new rate will be Rs 20. For distances more than 20 km, the fare will remain Rs 25, as it was earlier; and the same applies for distance less than 2 km stretch, for which the fare will remain Rs 5. Earlier, the fare structure was - for distance less than 5 km, the fare was Rs 5; for 5-10 km stretch, it was Rs 10; for 10-20 km distance, the rate was Rs 15 and for the 20-25 km stretch, it was Rs 20. From now on, a passenger travelling more than 2 km in metro has to pay Rs 10, which is double than that of the previous fare. The revised rates will be effective from 5 December onwards.
