KMDA installs water meters

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) had earlier decided to install water meters for commercial water connections for keeping a tab on the consumption pattern of the commercial connections. Currently, for commercial water connections, rates are charged based on the size of the ferrule that the commercial establishment is opting for and not according to the consumption. However, no charges are payable for domestic connections. The installation of these water meters may bring a change in the pattern of charges which might shift from the current pattern of charges to charges according to their water usage. Following these baby steps, the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) too has started installing water meters in collaboration with Madhyamgram municipality in order to keep a check on wastage of water. Madhyamgram Municipality is installing water meters in households too unlike KMC which fall under its 14 wards. It has already installed water meters on 2,000 households and the rest of the households are to be fitted with one soon. Madhyamgram municipality is the second civic body of the state to opt for water meters in order to keep a check on water consumption. The civic body has already spent Rs 1.23 crore for launching the project in Madhyamgram on a pilot basis. Out of the 28 wards under Madhyamgram municipality, 14 have already received these water meters. With the help of these water meters, water consumptions of 36,000 households will be monitored.
