KMC to install water meters

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has recently decided to install water meters for commercial water connections for keeping a tab on the consumption pattern of the commercial connections. Currently, for commercial water connections, rates are charged based on the size of the ferrule that the commercial establishment is opting for and not according to the consumption. The current charge for commercial water connections ranges from Rs 525 per month for 10mm ferrule to Rs 3,000 per month for 25mm ferrule. However, no charges are payable for domestic connections. The installation of these water meters may bring a change in the pattern of charges which might shift from the current pattern of charges to charges according to their water usage. But the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has not yet taken a decision on changing the pattern of charges and these water meters are installed with an objective of keeping a tab on the consumption of water by the various commercial establishments. The KMC currently has no idea about individual consumption of water by these commercial establishments and they fear that these establishments are wasting water because of the flat rates charged according to the ferrule size and not the consumption. Mayor Firhad Hakim said, “We will not charge anything additional, but installing a meter will help us measure who is consuming how much water”.
