In order to reduce power consumption and carbon emissions, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to install smart LED streetlights in the areas which fall under KMC and Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC). Mayor Firhad Hakim has announced recently that one lakh smart LED streetlights will be installed as a part of the Green City Mission. Hakim said, "It is with great pride that we dedicate the smart and energy efficient LED streetlights to the people of Bengal. Another milestone towards achieving an energy efficient state. These streetlights will illuminate the lives of the citizens, enable more savings, security and ensure a greener future for the people".
The Urban Development Department of KMC has tied up with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) for installation of these smart LED streetlights. The installation will be completed in phases and approximately 60,000 LED lights will be installed in Bankura, Beldanga, Budge Budge, Khardah and Durgapur in the first phase. These smart LED streetlights will reduce carbon emissions by 8,500 metric tons and will save 12.2 million units of electricity annually. Venkatesh Dwivedi, Director of EESL said, "Bengal is a testament to the great partnership between EESL and the department of Urban Development & Municipal Affairs, with their shared vision of achieving greater energy efficiency and sustainability. We are confident that we will replicate this success across other districts of Bengal as well. We are committed to successfully implement this programme across the state to enable energy efficiency for all".
