Kharagpur IIT develops model to predict rainfall pattern

Researchers of IIT Kharagpur have recently developed a statistical model which can be used to predict patterns and trends of rainfall in different climatic regions of India. The researchers of the Centre for Oceans, Rivers, Atmosphere and Land Sciences (CORAL) has developed this model keeping in mind both local and remote factors which causes weather changes.

Our study finds that the summer monsoon rainfall variability is governed by the surface temperatures of the Eastern Pacific, Central Pacific, Atlantic, and the north Indian Oceans, and equatorial zonal winds,

Prof Jayanarayanan Kuttippurath stated. The lead researcher Dr. Prijitha J Nair said,

In our model, we have used a technique which removes the impact of individual factors to find the trends in rainfall. The model can be used to find the contribution of individual factors to rainfall and can be applied to estimate the trends and variability of rainfall.

The team stated that this model can be used in any part of the world to predict weather conditions just by changing the relevant factors which affect the changes.
