Kamarhati municipality to use CDs against water wastage

Taking ahead the movement to stop wastage of water, Kamarhati Municipality will soon start campaigning with the help of audio CDs. The messages that will be delivered to the people under the civic body is that neither water should be wasted at home nor outside. If people found water flowing out of streetside taps, those should be immediately turned off.

With paucity in rain there has already been a dearth of water in the area and thus officials said that it was one of the steps to prevent the situation to deteriorate further. “Water level has already gone down in the scorching summer season and thus water pressure in most taps have lowered as well. Thousands of  residents are suffering as a result. Even under these circumstances, some waste water, adding to the trouble. If the awareness can be spread among all, the problem will be solved to a great extent or else situation will turn from bad to worse everyday. Thus the decision of playing audio CDs in different areas,” said Kamarhati Municipality chairman Gopal Saha.

Sources said that there were about 73000 holdings under the 35 wards of the municipality where water from Ganga is filtered and supplied through pipelines but compared to the number of residents the supply is short. As an alternative, water is pumped out of deep tubewells. There are around 60 such pumps in the municipal area. Both water at Ganga and the underground water table had receded leading to a severe scarcity of water here.

It was also found out that of the 450 standpoint taps along the streets, many dont have a stopper. The civic body is planning to install stoppers immediately to stop water wastage. Together with lack of awareness among people to turn off taps after use is leading to huge water loss everyday.
