Irrigation and waterbodies census to be held in the state.

For the first time Minor Irrigation Census (MIC) will be undertaken soon by the state Water Resources Investigation and Development Department (WRIDD) to have an overall figure of waterbodies in the entire state of West Bengal. The operation will be conducted by the State Water Investigation Directorate (SWID) which comes under the wing of WRIDD and is responsible for carrying out investigation along with a qualitative and quantitative estimate of water resources in the state.

A senior official of the WRIDD department said that the main aim behind the move is to have a concise data for sensible and logical planning when it comes to using water for irrigation, and the fact that groundwater level is depleting cannot be denied so its high time to take measures to prevent indiscriminate extraction of groundwater.

One of the official of SWID said that the budget has already passed to the Centre for undertaking the MIC and they are waiting for the approval.
