Intense heat waves hit South Bengal

Intense heat waves have hit the South Bengal districts like Bankura, Purulia, West Midnapore, and Birbhum and the temperature there might cross over 40 degrees Celsius according to the Meteorological Department. The heat wave has hit the city of Kolkata too, with the maximum temperature reaching 37.2 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department of Calcutta has predicted that the maximum temperature along with the humidity will go up in the next few days which will make the weather even sultrier. There are no chances of rainfall, at least for the next three to four days and the temperature might reach 40 degrees Celsius. The temperature of Kolkata is currently two degrees higher than the normal temperature and it has become sweaty due to a cyclonic circulation which is drawing moisture from the Bay of Bengal. An official of Indian Meteorological Department, Calcutta said, “The body produces sweat to bring down its temperature when the conditions are hot. The sweat leaves behind a cool feeling when it evaporates from the skin. When the humidity level is high, sweat does not evaporate easily. The mechanism fails and the body produces even more sweat making people dehydrated”. Although the current temperature is around 37 degrees Celsius, the real feeling is that of 46 degrees Celsius on the human skin because of high moisture content in the air. The real feeling of temperature is measured by the effect of the temperature, relative humidity, wind and the angle of the sun on the human skin, so many a times it is possible that it feels hotter than the actual temperature. The doctors have issued certain guidelines for the people to fight the heat waves, which include avoiding spicy and oily foods in the fluctuating temperature, avoiding direct sunlight and wearing cotton clothes to get relief from the humidity.
