Indian scientist develops signal enhancing wallpaper!

Internet is not a luxury anymore; rather it happens to be a necessity in the 21st century world. It connects us with the world and makes things easier for us, be it in case of navigation or simply entertainment. WIFI routers provide us with this essential networking connection at our homes and offices and power our smartphones or smart televisions. It also connects a lot of devices to the internet which are nowadays considered essential items like smart lights or personal assistant services like Alexa. However, most of the smart devices can perform their best only when they are connected to a strong Wi-Fi or internet connection. The biggest enemies of these connections or the signals are walls, as they absorb the signals and compromise the strength of the connection. In order to solve this common problem, researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) - Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory have developed a smart surface which can be installed on walls to enhance wireless signals. These smart surfaces will act as wallpaper and can be installed on walls very easily. The smart surfaces don’t require any power source thus reducing operation costs. These smart walls are capable of reflecting the signal released by devices and boosting the wireless network strength up to 10 times. Indian scientist Hari Balakrishnan, senior study author behind the smart wall said, “The core goal here was to explore whether we can use elements in the environment and arrange them to direct the signal in a way that we can actually control. If you want to have wireless devices that transmit at the lowest possible power, but give you a good signal, this seems to be one extremely promising way to do it”.  According to the developers, these smart walls are also capable of boosting 5G signals.
