Howrah Buildings To Enhance Greenery ?

Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC) is set to introduce new buildings to enhance the greenery in the city. In order to get the building plans sanctioned, the builders of high-rises will need to build eco-friendly structures, and need to abide by the rules prescribed under the West Bengal Housing and Industry Regulation Act (WBHIRA).

According to HMC commissioner Dijin Krishna, ‘the new building rules would be strictly enforced’ and in case of any deviation from the rules the builders would be penalized. On being asked about the drive behind the framing of new rules, HMC sources revealed that the civic body receives grievance on unauthorized construction. And to put a stop to this practice, the rules were laid out. Encompassing an area of 98 square kilometres, the HMC is home to almost 2.2 million people.

The builders are required to use construction material that ensures minimum radiation from the buildings and the rules prohibit the use of glazed tiles on the exteriors of any building. Another mandatory requirement in all the high rise buildings is the rain water harvesting. Besides this, mandatory installation of solar panels, proper fighting system is essential. In addition to this, the high rises would be developed in such a way so that residents can practice rooftop and balcony gardening.
