Higher education department wants more NIRF participation by colleges

Looking at the low number of participation for institutions of higher studies at the national level, West Bengal department of higher studies has decided that more and more colleges and universities in the state will apply at the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). For that that department has arranged for special training for these universities.

Sources said that on April 24 a plan will be drawn with state universities and on May 2 and 3 with state colleges of the state.

The ranking had begun since 2016 but there had not been a satisfactory participation by colleges and universities of West Bengal. There had hardly been 50 participating institutions. Of the 20 government universities about eight had participated. The department wants a better participation and thus had decided to put up the workshop. However, not all colleges have been asked to participate. About 80 of those, with NAAC grade B++ and above have been asked to attend the workshop. Sources said the reason behind this move was that in the view of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council or NAAC, these colleges have the potential to perform well at the national level. Of the colleges, the maximum number is under the University of Calcutta followed by colleges under the National University.

It was found out that the workshop will train authorities about the procedure of application for the ranking and then how to prepare for it. Officials believe that Bengal has been lagging behind compared to other states because not many colleges from here participate in the ranking procedure. Another reason for stepping up on the number of application at NIRF is to project the colleges at a national level. If the colleges can rank within 100 nationally it will be beneficial to these institutions in the future.
