Heritage committees to be set up in municipalities

The Government of West Bengal has announced that it would form individual heritage committees in the municipalities to conduct beautification works of heritage spots more smoothly and to boost the tourism sector of the state. State Municipal Affairs Minister Firhad Hakim said at the state Assembly, "There are heritage structures throughout the state. The temples in Bishnupur are part of our heritage, similarly, a number of places in Purulia are heritage spots. The heritage committee will ensure that urban and rural heritage is given equal priority. They will suggest measures on how heritage places can be beautified so that it can attract tourists". The committees will be termed ‘Heritage Conservation Committee’ and the Chairman of the concerned municipality will be its chairman and the Executive Officer of the municipality will be the convener. The committee would also have other members - a nominated member by the district magistrate of the concerned district, a nominated member of the Director of the state Information and Cultural Affairs, an eminent architect, an artist, an environmentalist, a historian, the executive engineer of the concerned Municipal Engineering Directorate and the Town Planner of the municipality. The committee will work collectively to identify, conserve, beautify and make people aware of the heritage spots of the district.
