Headmasters are being trained again

A headmaster of a school is the in-charge for everything and is held responsible for every little thing that goes wrong in the school. The education department, thus has decided that to give headmasters of state-run schools a hands-on training on how to run the school administration.

Experienced headmasters of different state schools have been handpicked to give such training. Sources at the state education department said that on Thursday about 20-25 headmasters from different districts have been trained for the purpose. They will act as trainers in their respective districts. However, owing to the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls, the programme would not be initiated. It will begin from June onwards. It will be a week-long workshop for headmasters.

Asked about the topics covered in the training, a senior education department official said that a headmaster of a school was likely to face different types of situations in the day-to-day running of a school. He would be taught what the best way was to handle those situations and how to tackle resistances in implementing several rules.

Headmasters will also be given some behavioural guidelines while dealing with teachers and what all headmasters were expected to do for the overall development of schools. Besides there are several legalities that a headmaster has to deal with and a lot of litigation too is shouldered by headmasters on behalf of the school. They would be taught how to deal with those as well.

Officials said that headmasters of schools have to look into a number of extra-academic work other than the routine activities of schools. He also looks after the implementation of several school related projects of the government such as Kanyashree, mid-day meal, Sabuj Sathi. Thus the need to train them arises to make them adept enough to handle these with ease. The training, as of now will be limited to headmasters of Madhyamik schools only.

Headmasters, however, are divided in their opinions about it. While many are receptive and said it will be of help, some said that the characters of problems in different schools of the state were different and there could not be any cut and dried solution to it. “Is it possible to assimilate all the problems that we face as headmasters in one year, let alone in our service time? This will only be a waste of time,” said a school headmaster, on condition of anonymity.
