Government Focusing On Eco-Friendly Transportation Mode

In a bid to revive the services on the RG Kar bridge and Canal Bridge tram tracks, the transport department has begun repairing. This is a clear indication that the government may continue with the eco-friendly mode of transportation in some parts of the city, contrary to the belief that the tram services might be discontinued. The third oldest route, the tram services from Belgachhia, were withdrawn in January last year after the transport department started concretizing the tracks. However, the tracks were levelled before Durga Puja to aid the traffic.

The concretization of the tracks on RG Kar bridge and Canal Bridge resumed on Sunday and is expectd to conclude by May 1. The new tracks will be laid following the digging and removal of debris. The Belgacchia-Esplanade and the Belgacchia-Howrah are the busiest routes in the city, as per the senior department officials. According to the sources, the tram services connecting Belgachhia started in 1902, and the third oldest route after electrification of trams. Initially, the depot consisted of three gates, two of which were used by trams to enter and one to exit. After the commencement of the Dum Dum-Tollygunge Metro route, the two gates were done away with immediately.
