The veteran actor, director, theatre artist, writer-playwright Utpal Dutta was an artist beyond excellence. He started his journey from the theatre where he is considered a pioneer. Dutta even founded his own theatre group known as the ‘Calcutta Little Theatre Group’ in 1947. The actor has equally done some phenomenal work in both Bengali and Hindi film industry. Utpal Dutta received a National Film Award for Best Actor in 1970 and three Filmfare Best Comedian Awards over his career span of 40-years which includes both theatre and cinema. In the late twentieth century, the actor landed in some hot water for his Bengali political play ‘Kallol’. He has done around 200 films and some of his best works were with renowned directors like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, and James Ivory. Some of his notable works are; ‘Aguntuk’, ‘Bhuvan Shome’, ‘Golmal’, ‘Rang Birangi’, ‘Padma Nadir Majhi’, are a few to name. Today on his 90th birth anniversary the film industry and we the team of Jiyo Bangla pays our homage to this great actor.
