Gadiara: The Mystery!

Kolkata was the capital of India during the British Raj and there are still many historical tales hidden in different places of the state of the West Bengal. If you look closely you will find a place that will take you back in time.

Gadiara, a village in Howrah district is one such place that exudes both history and mystery. Why history? Because there lies the ruins of 18th century British Fort; the Mornington Fort. The fort was built by Lord Clive and the mystery about it is that why was the fort named Mornington. The reason behind building this fort was to control the river traffic. Gadiara is situated at the convergence of the Damodar, Hoogli and Rupnarayan river. The Britishers built the Mornington Fort to guard the entrance by the rivers against pirates. The Fort is in ruins today because of natural calamities like flood and cyclone but it still wreaks of antiquity.

There is also a lighthouse here. Gadiara is ideal for a picnic. You can enjoy the ferry ride to Geonkhali just across the river. If you are bored of cliched picnic spots then Gadiara is a fresh option for you to try.

Buses are available from Esplanade Kolkata. Local trains run daily from Howrah station. Take a train for Bagnan and an auto from there. If you do not have time for long trips then go to Gadiara, it will be a great refreshment for you and your family.
