Fish for Healthy Mind, Body and Soul

Fish is among the healthiest foods on the planet as it comes loaded with important nutrients. Numerous researches conducted over the last few years have proved fatty types of fish to be the healthiest. These fishes contain fat-soluble vitamin D which most people are deficient in, given that people spend most of their waking hours indoors and away from sunlight. Fatty fishes have also been found to contain omega-3 fatty acids, for our bodies and brains to function optimally. To meet our omega-3 requirements, eating fatty fish at least once or twice a week is highly recommended.

Heart attacks and strokes are common causes of deaths in the world. Fish is considered to be the best foods one can eat for a healthy heart. Unsurprisingly enough, many studies have shown that people who consume fish on a regular basis seem to have lower risk of heart attacks and strokes. At least one serving of fish a week is recommended to reduce heart related diseases and strokes.

Fishes rich in Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for growth and development, which is why it has been widely recommended to expecting and nursing mothers. However, pregnant women should avoid eating raw fish (sushi), as it may contain microorganisms which may be harmful to the foetus.

Fish consumption has been linked to prevent old age related cognitive decline. Studies have proved that people who eat fish on a weekly basis have more grey matter. Studies have also shown that people who eat fish on a regular basis are less likely to be depressed; which means consuming fish has the potential to make us happier.

Omega -3 oils have been found to precondition cells in the eye to withstand stress. In laboratory tests, human eye cells exposed to constant light have been found to withstand damage if supplemented with such oils. Thus, regular consumption of fish is essential to healthy vision as well.

Most healthy lifestyle diets now include fish on the menu for good reason. The consumption of fish/fish oil is associated with a lowered body fat mass and better body composition.

Last but not the least; primary reason for eating fish is the ease of preparation and simply because it is delicious. Even though there are innumerable health benefits of consuming fish, being delicious outweighs all reasons for fish to be favored over many other items on the menu.
