EW Metro till Phoolbagan by 2019-end

Railway ministry has decided that the East-West Metro Rail services from Salt Lake Stadium to Phoolbagan would be initiated by the end of this year with a minimum fare of Rs 7.

We are aiming at November this year to initiate services of the elevated corridor from Salt Lake to Phoolbagan and work of the entire project – which includes the underground corridor from Phoolbagan to Howrah Maidan – is expected to end by June 2021,” said a senior Railway official.

It was found out that 50 percent of the 10.8 km part of the East-West Metro which is supposed to be underground, has been completed. The completed work has been done between Sealdah and Esplanade stations. There will be six underground stations in the new route. Officials said that no building will be damaged due to the on-going work of the project.

The portion of the route between Mahakaran Station and Howrah station, measuring about 525 meters, will be underwater which has generated a lot of excitement among people of Kolkata.

Metro Rail authorities said that every 10 meters of the underwater tunnel have cost Rs 10 lakh. A total amount of Rs 8574 crore had been sanctioned for the East-West Metro Rail project.

It has also been decided that to begin with, trains on the EW Metro route would ply at about 80 kmph. An estimated number of 10 lakh people would be ferried every day by the year 2035.

Metro Rail authorities have also cleared that there was no problem of land acquisition for the EW Metro Rail project. Similarly, they had said that there was no problem of land with the Barasat Metro Rail project as well.
