Engineless trains between Howrah and Delhi

A high-speed train journey between Howrah and New Delhi could soon become reality with the Indian railways planning to introduce a Train-18 trainset on this route. This train would be a first of its kind for the Indian Railways and will initially be tested before being rolled out on specific routes, among which Howrah-Delhi would be one.

With a capacity of running at 160 km per hour, this train would complete the 1400 km journey between Howrah and Kolkata in approximately 12 hours. The Rajdhani Express currently takes 16 hours to do so. This would be an engineless train and would be sleek and luxurious. The train will have 14 AC chair cars and 2 Executive class coaches. The coaches have traction, which allows greater acceleration. Sliding doors, vacuum-controlled toilets, swivelling seats, on-board infotainment, and so on would be make this a very comfortable journey.

The train will undergo short trial runs to test the braking and air-conditioning systems, and the crew will be familiarized with the on-board systems. Speed tests will also be monitored, and this entire monitoring process will be supervised by a special team from the Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO). Based on this success, plans are already on for a Train-20 series of trains which would have the capacity to run at 200 km per hour.

So, looks like a superfast comfortable journey between Howrah and Delhi is on the cards, very soon…
