Eastern India’s first Male Infertility & Impotence Clinic in a hospital set-up

The first male infertility and impotence clinic in a hospital set up in eastern India was launched by Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals (AGH) recently. It has the facility of the latest treatments for erectile and ejaculatory dysfunction, including surgeries to correct penile deformities with implants.

According to the Massachusetts Male Aging Study, about 52 percent of men aged from 40 to 70 years suffer from erectile dysfunction out of which 17 percent is mild, 25 percent moderate and 10 percent complete.

Erectile dysfunction should not be neglected as it shares the same risk factors of cardiovascular diseases. To deal with the problem, there are modern treatments, including intracavernous injection, vacuum erection devices, penile prostheses (implant). Medical support can focus on hormonal treatment like testosterone replacement and psychosexual counselling. Apollo can also help patients with Medicated Urethral System for erection,

said Dr. Atanu Jana, consultant urologist, Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata.

He said that the major causes of erectile dysfunction were Psychogenic, Vasculogenic (cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and major pelvic surgery or radiotherapy), neurogenic (central-multiple sclerosis, Parkinsonism, tumor, stroke, spinal cord disease. peripheral - T2DM, alcoholism, polyneuropathy, surgery), anatomical, Peyronie’s disease, penile fracture, congenital curvature of penis, hormonal (hypogonadism, hyperprolactinemia, hyper and hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease).

Erectile dysfunction is a rising malady in this modern era of stress. It is affecting the younger and younger population and is standing out like a major health hazard. It is also an indicator of serious vascular disease, which might be the harbinger of cardiovascular disease. We need to take more cognizance of this both for pleasurable sexual function as well as detection of serious health maladies,

said Dr. Amit Ghose, senior consultant urologist, AGH.

To address erectile dysfunction it is important for individuals to concentrate on lifestyle modifications like - avoid smoking, maintain body weight, regular exercise, stop alcohol abuse, modify medications, optimize management of DM, HTN and heart disease.

To address penile deformity the hospital has also launched surgeries, including penile implants, correction of varicocele, correction of obstruction to the vas difference and correction of penile curvature with a bovine pericardial patch.
