Doc donates blood for patient, sets example

A doctor at the Raiganj Super Specialty Hospital has shown an extraordinary gesture by going out of his way to help two of his patients. The doctor, a child specialist,Nilanjan Mukherjee donated blood to two of his patients suffering from thalassemia. The blood group of both the children and the doctor was A+ and as soon as he got to know that, he wanted to donate blood, since the blood banks are running dry and A+ blood was not available at that moment. This is one of the rare scenes when a doctor goes out of his way for a patient to save his or her life. Doctor Nilanjan Mukherjee after donating blood to the five-year-old boy and his two-year-old sister said, “I was making rounds at the hospital and examined both the children. They were weak and I felt that the children needed fresh blood for their recovery. I learnt that there was a shortage of blood at the facility. As my blood group and the children’s is same, I decided to donate blood immediately”. The children’s parents were thankful to the doctor for his kind gesture and said they would always be grateful towards him. The children’s father, Mohammad Arju, a resident of Belua village in Bihar’s Katihar district and a daily wage earner said, “We had admitted the children to hospital three days ago. But there was no sign of recovery. They needed blood and there was no stock at the hospital. The doctor has saved our children’s lives and we will remember him forever”. The chief medical health officer of North Dinajpur, Prakash Mridha appreciated Doctor Mukherjee’s gesture and said, “Thalassemia patients always get a priority at the blood bank but these days, there is a shortage of blood with us. That is why the children and their parents have faced the problem. But the manner in which the doctor has helped them is to be appreciated”.
