Delhi to Kolkata in 12 hrs

Soon the travelling hours to Delhi from Kolkata will be reduced to 12 hours. The railways plan to do this within the next four years. In the same way, they plan to complete the journey between Mumbai and Delhi in 10 hours. The plan is to increase the maximum speed of the trains to 160 kmph. Currently, the fastest trains can run at a maximum speed of 130 kmph. To boost the country’s transportation sector the government will spend about Rs 13,500 crores in the coming four years.

The Delhi-Mumbai and Howrah-Delhi routes are the busiest ones, so reducing the travel time of these two routes is necessary for the better railway infrastructure. V K Yadav, the Railway Board Chairman has instructed the officials to implement the plans by August 31st this year. He has also sent a proposal to the prime minister.  According to reports, the railways plan to involve the private sector to run the passenger trains on selected routes. They also thought of launching a campaign to encourage commuters to give up their concessions. Yadav placed the proposals at a meeting of group secretaries. The proposal also included plans to eliminate 2,568 level crossings on Golden Quadrilateral and diagonals having rail-over and rail under bridges. Railway ensured to get the proposals approved in the next 100 days and the entire thing is estimated to cost around Rs 50,000 crores which will be completely funded by the central government.
