City to get two new dog pounds

The health department of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will soon put up two dog pounds. Two places have already been earmarked for the project. The two spots are Bank Road under Ward Number143 and under the Garden Reach flyover within Ward Number - 80.

Deputy mayor and Member, Mayor-in-Council (health), Atin Ghosh had about the plan recently. He said that that about 10 acres of land have been identified on Bank Road at Joka in South Kolkata where 150-200 cages would be made. He added that under the Garden Reach flyover another 100-odd cage can be put.

Sources at the KMC health department said that once these two are in place it would be easier to keep the dogs, vaccine and sterilize them.

After the death of several puppies at the government-run NRS Hospital, the KMC received a lot of flak from different quarters and at that time mayor, Firhad Hakim and Ghosh had said that a state-of-the-art dog pound needed to be built where dogs could be easily operated on and vaccinated. At present, there are two existing dog pounds within the KMC limits – one at Entally and the other one at Dhapa area. Health officers admitted that in spite of the improvement of infrastructure at these places it was not enough looking at the increasing population of stray dogs in the city.

It is expected that these two dog pounds will end a lot of stray dog-related problems for the KMC.
