City Of Joy Bonding Over Food

Sunday, a day of relaxation and enjoyment! And that can be clearly seen on the faces of the 50-odd people who are from different religion and culture, who came together to celebrate a unique event-‘Breakfast with Bakarkhani’- a food talk on lesser known winter breakfast delicacies like nehari, paya, dalpuri and  bakarkhani . The event was organized by Know Your Neighbour (KYN) in association with Kidderpore Unit for Social and Welfare activities and Right Track NGO at Saleha Palace, Kidderpore. According to Mohona Maitra of KYN: “Food is a part of our everyday life but in the recent past, we have seen how food has been used to create divide between communities and spread hatred.” The aim of this program was to mitigate taboos related to food and bridge the gap between communities. The tales and history of lesser-known winter delicacies were also discussed in details by the speakers Sabir Ahamed, Fatima Manzilat and Talat Kadiri. Sabir Ahamed also spoke about how Bakarkhani was named after the tragic love of Baker Khan, landlord of East Bengal and Khani Begum. He also spoke about the local makers of these traditional delicacies and how their professions are at stake because the next generation is not interested in traditional food making. “These foods are part of our heritage and it is our duty to make them known to a greater audience,” told Sabir. Apart from attending the discussion, participants were also seen enjoying the lip-Smacking beef nehari, paya, bakarkhani, Nan khatai and Dalpuri.
