Chandraketugarh- A Site Filled With Historical Relics!

Chandraketugarh is more than just a simple getaway for the fun lovers. A historical site located on the bank of Bidyadhari River in South 24 Pargana, this place has a lot to offer to the historians. Approximately about 50 kms from Kolkata, the relics excavated from the site is the foundation of serious study and dates back to the period before the establishment of the ‘Maurya Dynasty’ and a few of them are around 3000 years old. According to the excavation conducted by Ashutosh Museum of Indian Art and Archaeological Survey of India, it is believed that the city used to be a flourishing one during the ‘Pre-Mauryan to Pala Dynasty’ period. Back in those times, it was referred to as Gangaridai by the ancient Roman and Greek writers.

It would also fascinate you to know that the legend of Khana, a medieval Bengali language poet and legendary astrologer between the ninth and 12th centuries AD is closely associated with this place. A mound has been discovered bearing the names of Khana and Mihir, with Khana being the  daughter-in-law of the famous astronomer and mathematician, Varahamihira.

Among the excavation a temple has been revealed spreading across 45 sq km, and dating back to 700 to 600 BC. Buddha stupas and images, coins of Jataka stories, decorative designs of Pala period, terracotta sealing and plaques and number of earthen utensils and showpieces have also been collected from the site as significant relics.
