Chandannagar heritage & tourism gets a boost

The heritage and tourism sector of Chandannagore will be getting a boost after a memorandum of understanding (MoU) is signed between Bengal and France. The memorandum of understanding states that the West Bengal Government in collaboration with the French government will explore ways to preserve the heritage of Chandannagore. The French will do their research work on Chandannagar since it was a French colony and also provide expertise in restoration of heritage sights and buildings. French ambassador Alexandre Ziegler recently visited Chandannagar, on the sidelines of the Bengal Global Business Summit and signed the MoU. He said, “The agreement will initiate a very important revitalization of Chandernagor’s Indo-French heritage”. Atri Bhattacharya, Tourism and Home Secretary said, “We have signed a MoU to together explore ways to redevelop Chandernagore heritage. There are some buildings that are either government property right now or can possibly be acquired. The French will do research and provide expertise in restoration and we will see in what phases we can fund the restoration of heritage precincts”. Specialists for restoring monuments from France will be visiting Chandannagar before summer for their first visit.
